1 Air Task Force was established in Aug 51 to operate in conjunction with XI Corps, the first Corps in the Indian Army. It came about as a result of the deficiencies experienced in coordinating air operations with land operations during J & K Ops in 1947-48. The name was subsequently changed to No. 1 Tactical (Air Support) Group in Jan 55 and finally, to No. 1 Tactical Air Centre on 01 Mar 57. It was the first of the Unitss set up for Joint Air/Land Warfare and thus, marked the beginning of Air/Land Warfare organization in India. This centre was formed on 16 Mar 50 as No. 2 Air Task Force (ATF)at2 Equipment Depot Bombay. Nucleus of officers and airmen arrived on attachment to 2 ED, AF for performing the duties. The role of the formation was to control AF Unitss in conducting Joint Operations Army in Bombay area. On 22 Jan 55, the name of this formation was changed to No. 2 Tactical Air Supports Group (TASG) keeping in its role and task. In the mean time, an Air Force element of joint HQ Bombay came in existence in 1957, therefore, the name of the formation was changed to 2 Tactical Air Centre (TAC) in Apr 57. On formation of Northern Command at Udhampur in Jun 1972, this centre was re-located at Nagrota and its affiliation changed to 16 Corps. 6 Tactical Air Centre of the Indian Air Force was formed at Leh on 17 Dec 62. The Centre was raised as a result of the overall plan of expansion of the Indian Air Force during the Sino-Indian conflict. The role of the Units was to conduct OAS, Exercises and Training within the area of responsibility of Ladakh. In Oct 71, the centre moved to Jalandhar and was affiliated to Head Quarters 11 Corps. 8 TAC, AF was raised on 8 Sep 1965 at Jammu. It was established to control Air Force Unitss in conducting joint operations with No 1 Corps. It is affiliated to 1 Corps, the elite strike corps of the Indian Army that was raised at Varanasi in Apr 65 prior to Indo-Pak war. The centre moved back to Mathura after 65 Ops on 16 Mar 66. The Units moved to its present KLP location, within 1 Corps area, in 2001. At the time of formation of the centre, it was placed under the command and control of HQ WAC, IAF.As the peace time location of this centre was at Mathura, the command and control of the Units was transferred to HQ CAC, IAF in 1967. The Centre was affiliated to 2 Corps on its formation and moved to Krishnanagar and participated in Bangladesh Operations along with it. The first Commander, Gp Capt MC Kappen took over the command of 10 TAC on 04 Apr 83 and shifted the centre from 34 Wing to its interim location in EME OTM Complex, Bathinda Military Station on 23 Apr 84.
